Does marketing your self-published book feel like the absolute worst? Social media, pitching, fear of what people will think.
I did an informal poll in my head just now of all the conversations I’ve had with writers and about 99.9% of them said they resent marketing too.
But I’m here to tell you, it doesn’t have to be.
It can feel so good because you spend way more time thinking about other people than yourself.
In short, make your audience feel awesome.
I shared this on Instagram earlier this week and got a great question: How do I do that?
Brilliant. One of the chapters in my upcoming book answers that question in full with real-life examples. But since that beauty is still in production, here are four strategies to try this week:
1. Build belief in your audience that they are capable of living out your message.
Do they think they’ll never be able to forgive? Read their Bibles? Get over their pain? You’re here to tell them they can and you’ll show them how. (For a story to inspire you on the power of belief, see this IG post.)
2. Demonstrate the value of your message so your audience feels special.
If you’re not sure how, make a list of ten reasons why someone should live the way you prescribe. Boom. You’ve got ten weeks worth of content. When people see how valuable your message is, they’ll feel really good being part of it.
3. Show up with energy.
If you aren’t excited about what you’re doing, they sure as heck aren’t going to be. This doesn’t mean you have to be a cheerleader fake version of yourself. But it does mean you need to set the temperature in the room. If you want them to feel joyful, you need to be joyful x 10.
4. Be curious.
Ask genuine questions. Don’t automatically assume you know what your audience needs. Genuine curiosity always makes people feel cared for.
Try these in the next week and tell me how you feel about marketing. I think you’ll see that not only your audience feels awesome, but you do too.
